Increased Raw Material Prices Had Negative Influence on the First Quarter Results of Achema

The nitric fertiliser and chemical producer Achema pertaining to the concern Achema Group has received income amounting to LTL 353.9 million during the first quarter, which is 50% more than during the same period of 2006, when the company earned LTL 235 million. However, based on the unaudited data, due to the increased prices of gas and other raw materials, Achema suffered a LTL 0.5 million loss during the first quarter.

According to Mr Jonas Sirvydis, CEO of AB Achema, the significant increase in the main prices of raw materials reduces the company's competitiveness and corrects future investment projects. Mr Sirvydis claims that the company takes interest in technologies requiring less expensive raw materials and energy resources and they hope to find optimal solutions.

Considering the current situation, Achema has suspended its investment in the urea plant and modernisation of other objects for about a half-year.

The company has implemented the environmental management system according to the requirements of ISO 14001 standard as of 2000, and the quality management system of AB Achema was certified to ISO 9002 standard requirements in 1998.

Achema has started the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health Management System OHSAS this year.
